Dear Kuppas 

Namaste !! 

This is a brief & unstructured note on the evolution of the Kuppa Vamsavruksham (The Kuppa Family Tree). It was difficult to make a beginning on this. After some pondering, I thought of making a free flow of information of what I know and what I have witnessed in the evolution of this sacred effort of our fathers and forefathers.

Members of the Kuppa lineage have been men & women of distinct and unique talents. Most of them were Vedic Pandits – taking up Veda Adhyayana (advocating and teaching Vedas in a time when Veda Adhyayana was patronized by the communities) as a vocation along with agricultural farming to make a living. It is believed that the Kuppa lineage has withstood the tide and test of time – and has over time migrated into cities. 

Around the turn of the millennium, 1999 – 2001, our elders (of our parents’ generation) have come together to gather information of Kuppa fraternity from across many places. They have identified that many Kuppa families have been residing in the Hyderabad city itself – apart from other places like Guntur, Kunchavaram, Tenali, etc, in Andhra Pradesh. 

After considerable thought and effort – they have resolved to create the “Kuppa Vamsa Vruksham” - a mammoth project – which spanned over 2 years. The initiative was led by Late Sri Kuppa Avadhani garu, Sri Kuppa Balarama Krishna Moorthi garu (my father), Late Sri Kuppa Narayana Sastry garu and joined by a few others. This project involved in touring many villages and towns where the generations of Kuppa families lived, accessing genealogy archives in Telugu University, finding whereabouts of Kuppa families in cities. The information was aggregated manually. With some principles laid out for the design and development of the VamsaVrusksham (which will be published as a separate article) – the first “Kuppa VamsaVruksham” was published as a book. Many members of the Kuppa community have this book, including some members in this group. (I will post the scanned copy of the book in this group for everyone’s reference. This book is published in Telugu language). 

I must also mention that, the likes of us were not actively involved in this project. An electronic copy of this effort too was not made (or is unavailable). However, with the available version as a book, a new project needs to be taken up to publish an updated version of the VamsaVruksham by adding missing & new names. 

Apart from the VamsaVruskham, the group has formed 2 societies to foster the wellbeing of current and future generations. The 2 societies are 

a. Kuppa Vamseeya Vidya Abhivudhdhi Samstha 

A society to help and foster means for higher education to each and every Kuppa – so that they are empowered and equipped with education – extent to which each can pursue. The ideal is / was – that education is the only enabler for people to survive and prosper.

The society created a corpus – and began to identify Kuppa families who needed financial support to educate their respective children. The society offered interest-free loans to the seekers – which has helped them to achieve their goals. The society has achieved the objective of having empowered all “known” seekers of assistance. 

b. Kuppa Vamseeya Veda Adhyayana Samstha 

A society to foster and offer the knowledge of Vedas to the humanity by running schools / institutions to teach Vedas to whoever can take up that path. This effort could not gain much traction – due to the inherent challenges of running an institution of that kind – which needed a cultural renaissance of sorts – for parents to enroll children into this line of education. (we can delve more on this in the future discussions).  

The above 2 societies are active in registration by dormant in action currently. When the VamsaVruksham project was in progress, there used to be active gathering of Kuppa members once in a month. The meetings used to take place in each of our homes in a round-robin basis. However, by the year 2005 / 2006 – these meetings stopped. 

Current Aspiration and Proposed Way forward:

As a person who has witnessed the evolution and formation of these groups and the development of the VamsaVruksham – and a few like Kumara Swamy Sastry who was also actively involved at that time – it is our aspiration to revive this connection. Not all who are listed in the VamsaVruksham book are on social media. An attempt must be made to contact and trace as many as possible. 

This note is a humble attempt to make every member of this group aware of the above background (some have already known). There are many Linkedin I have reached out to, who are yet to respond. I thank everyone to have responded to the request. I request you all to please reach out to any Kuppa you know and invite them to this group.

While it is too early to have a grand plan, I am confident that, with the number of tools that are available today – we can make a better, more comprehensive & current version of the VamsaVruksham. This can be a humble tribute to our elders who have initiated this and a great offering to current and future generations of Kuppas.

As a next step, in the coming week, I will publish a scanned copy of the current VamsaVruksham along with a contact list. I look forward to your comments and responses. I will work with a few members who are familiar with the past effort and share more structured inputs to you all – so we can together make an inclusive collaboration for the community.
